ALMA/SCUBA2 UDS and COSMOS Surveys: AS2UDS and AS2COSMOS

ALMA/SCUBA2 UDS Survey: AS2UDS

With the completion of the wide-field SCUBA-2 850um surveys undertaken by the S2CLS consortium, we started to exploit the widest homogeneous map from that survey. This map was of the ~1 square degree UKIDSS Ultra-Deep Survey (UDS) region, where the SCUBA-2 data reached 0.9mJy rms across the whole field. The UKIDSS-UDS benefits from extremely deep near-infrared and optical imaging over the whole field, and so identifying the ~700 850um sources in this region with ALMA would provide a firm statistical basis for studying their properties. This project became the ALMA/SCUBA-2 Ultra Deep Survey: AS2UDS.

AS2UDS built upon our experience from the ALESS ALMA survey of ~100 sources in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South, but using the developing capabilities of ALMA to efficiently obtain 850-um continuum observations of the ~700 SCUBA-2 sources in this field. The precise locations of these sources then allowed to exploit the multiwavelength data for this region to understand the properties of these galaxies in previously unimaginable detail and precision.

ALMA/SCUBA2 COSMOS Survey: AS2COSMOS

The SCUBA2 COSMOS Survey (S2COSMOS) is a collaboration of ~90 scientists across the communities of the East Asian Observatory, as well as the UK and Canada, who run the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). S2COSMOS is an EAO Large Programme to complete and extend the incomplete SCUBA2 850um coverage of the COSMOS field resulting from the S2CLS survey.

This project built upon the existing S2CLS coverage of COSMOS in a two-phase approach: first completing the coverage of the full field to the depth of the deepest existing 850um S2CLS maps (1.5mJy rms) and then increasing the depth of the full 2 square degree field to 1.2mJy rms. The survey exploits the immense increase in mapping speed, fidelity and sensitivity of the new SCUBA2 submillimeter camera on the JCMT. The goal of the survey is to provide the first large sample (>1000 sources) of extragalactic sources selected in a single contiguous field in the 850-um waveband. This atmospheric window allows us to access the redshifted far-infrared emission from luminous but highly, high-redshift galaxies and AGN - pin-pointing an intense era of activity in the early Universe associated with the formation of massive galaxies and black holes. This large survey will significantly improve our understanding of submillimetre galaxies, building on our work with AS2UDS, via future exploitation of Atacama Millimeter Array (ALMA), James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Square Kilometer Array (SKA). The on-going ALMA follow-up element of this project is called AS2COSMOS.

The S2COSMOS survey is coordinated on-behalf of the consortium by: Scott Chapman (Ca), Ran Wang (CN), Yuichi Matsuda (JP), Yujin Yang (KR), Wei-Hao Wang (TW) and Ian Smail (UK).
